JANIS PAIGE
as Laureen Clegg
Although she didn't show up until a month before Capitol's demise, Laureen brought enough backstory to make her one of the most memorable characters of the series.
The first wife of Sam Clegg and biological mother of Trey, Laureen had been confined to a mental hospital after Myrna broke up her marriage in the early 1950's. Catatonic for over thirty years, Laureen snapped out of it in February 1987, and boy, was she ever pissed.
With the assistance of aide-de-camp Amos, Laureen tricked her way out of the hospital, assumed the alias Margaret Hansen, and got a job cleaning offices in the Capitol. There, she was befriended by her son Trey, who had no idea the sweet cleaning lady who fed him rice pudding was actually his mom. He ultimately hired her as a nanny for his son Scotty, returning Laureen to the Clegg estate -her rightful home- where she came face-to-face with old foe Myrna.
Alternately warm, bitter, and ready to reclaim what she'd lost, it is a testament to actress Janis Paige that Laureen was never cloying or irritating and managed to make such an indelible impression in a very short period of time.
